So what evidence do we have to support a castle or other building of similar stature in Aldbrough? In 1533, John Leland
received a royal commission from Henry Tudor "to make a search after England's
Antiquities, and peruse the Libraries of all Cathedrals, Abbies, Priories,
Colleges, etc. as also all places wherein Records, Writings and secrets of
Antiquity were reposed." and from 1539 - 1545 Leland toured Britain, reporting
all he saw. When visiting Aldbrough, he reported in his diary "a
ruined castle" by a beck.[1] |
Aldbrough St John & Stanwick St John
The
name Aldbrough, Aldburne in the Domesday Book, means simply an old or
ancient settlement. So it must have been in existence for a very long
time indeed. |
